Small groups exist to connect individuals to a community for the purpose of spiritual transformation.

We all long to know God more, to grow in his grace—but how do we get there? Scripture teaches that change is a community project. According to Paul, we need to connect deeply with the fellowship of believers, in order to be equipped for service (Ephesians 4:11-12), to be exhorted to holiness (4:13-15), and to be engaged in kingdom ministry (4:16).

In other words, spiritual transformation happens when the Word of God is infused into genuine relationships over an extended period of time. Small groups help create and invigorate those genuine relationships. As we experience life-on-life fellowship, we can help each other apply the truth of God’s Word to our individual circumstances. In essence, we function as “living mirrors,” ensuring that we not only hear the Word, but put it into practice as well (James 1:22-25).

At Cityview, we offer two different types of groups, each serving a different purpose.

Community Groups focus on relationships, striving to create an authentic community of the sort Luke describes in Acts 2:42-46. Change is a community project, and these groups ensure that change—life transformation—remains the focus of the congregation and its individual members. We encourage all members of the church to be involved in a Community Group. The typical Community Groups meets every other week, and consists of fellowship, prayer, and sermon discussion and application.

A Journey Group is an intense, short-term (three-year), weekly small group devoted to life-on-life, missional discipleship. These small groups provide one of the best ways for you to grow on your spiritual journey. This is a high-commitment, high-reward group, which provides an unparalleled opportunity for lasting growth.
